illustrated typography
having the advantage to use our own type and typefaces brings the opportunity to be creative with it and express our individuality. I think it would add a creative side to the calendars and would link as the calendars are for the creative department by using illustrated typography.
My Photos
In this i took this picture because i think the red could be changes to effect the mood of the picture, i like how the all uppercase pictures are placed on the top and it leaves all the negative space which draw your eyes.
I like the white space used this plus the typeface used creates a simple looking sigh the red stands out well against the white, it is a strong colour.
This picture leaves me with opportunities to add and change on photo shop.
the dirt drips adds texture and makes the image look odd. it makes you think what typeface are used.
i took this slight slanted in the style of brown Johnson i think this makes the picture look more attractive.
this wall has ingrained writing in it, it is hard to spot but it's looks interesting the mix of font faces and the writing looks hand based.
these two photo are similar the black on the red makes it look dull to be but i like the drips that are coming off it.
I took this photo so you could see both 'no exit' signs i like the red standing out off the grey and white
the text in this picture are mixed in with both upper and lower cases. i tried to take the picture at an angle in style of brown Johnson but still make it easy to read.
what interest me in this photo was the image icon at the top, that was what got my attention, i think the text is formal and suits the means of the poster.
i will have to think about this in my calender
this picture is full of different type of text faces, i like the reversed out letters also in upper case they create hierarchy.
the broken down sign is interesting but i like the black shadow the white text creates.
i like the way the letters was falling it made the, when you look at some of Brown Johnson's Pictures they often hold mystery and makes you think why it's there. i like the was monotones it make sthe picture look calm.
the reparation of the work sharks stands out to me and i thought the pattern the bins created was interesting, it was blue black blue
the tear away creates depth and makes the picture look old, think links in with some of Brown Johnson's work
this is interesting because the Y has been keened away and it looks odd but i like the effect it has on the viewer, i make you think
the yellow and black caught my eye. tracking each word creates more negative space and it allows the yellow to flow through.
i took this picture because i like the crack going through the numberes creating texture
I like the formality and informality of the text used the typefaces are both different and they absorbs the textured background. the text above are kerned close this builds in colour and becomes bold.
I like this picture how the type is reversed out makes you want to look,
i like the rough look to the is picture how some type are visible and some are not reminds of the brownjohnson's photo with the pub umbrella.

comparison of different artist
Angus O’Callaghan I think this artist captures this photo in the style of Robert Bwornjohn. the combined typefaces of different fonts jumping out is colorful and interesting, it is like when Robert Bwornjohn compered script with serif typefaces they bounce off each other.the red bold font looks like the main point of the picure but other typefaces fight for hierarchy, i like the 'olympic' it looks old and trustful. the artist captures the style of Robert Bwornjohn in a modern style.
In this photo i like how the 'S' fades in creates a mood of insecurity which makes the sigh become interesting and not a normal street sigh. also the 'P and A' looks to have been kerned and given space, unlike the 'W and A'. The black border surronding the text is eyecatching and it links with the black body copy on the sigh createing a feel of formality. The alignment centred as the 'Walk' sits under the text above.
This by Angus O’Callaghan, again you can see the battle for hireachry the look of this picture is busy, here i think that Angus O’Callaghan uses they style of Robert Brownjohn by useng the mono tone effect, the black and white filter brings out the bolf fonts used to show the prices. the hand written fonts show fun and openess.
Robert Brownjohn Street Level
This photography is interesting the main focus is the type, i don't know what the type is relating to but that is what makes it interesting, trying to guess. it looks like the top part is downside drawing attention to the word underneath. the 'E' looks to be drop caped as t is 2 or 3 point size bigger. All the charters are in capitals and in a sans serif font, the photo looks old because the paper is torn.
I like this photography, i think it is very quirky the hand writing is fun and the way the 'Y' slides down is odd, it looks like it is linking with the 'T'. It's interesting how the words chosen have been written on dirt it adds texture.

The first this that draws my attention is the kerned characters, this creates a lot of white space and makes the body copy stand out. also the bottom text look look the weight had been increased this creates hierarchy over the text above. I have noticed that all Robert Brownjohn's Street Level work is in black and white, this may be to give the body copy a highlighted point of view.
I can imagine the object in the photo being bright orange and white. i like the way his photo leave you guessing and pushes you to use your imagination.
This photo on pushed text pushed into mono tones in this picture is interesting having the text reversed out make sit stand out.
This photo is eye catching, the reflection draws different shades to the photo and makes you notice it. The white body copy is so bright against the mono tone grey and black it looks like it is glowing. their are different weight used for the text, in this it is effective on the 'closed' it is given an hierarchy over the rest. the word bellow has been Kern closely, the use of capital text is bold.
I like the script font used, it is playful and the texture in the photo interesting. i think it takes the seriousness of the sign and makes it calm and understanding, you normally find this in bold helvetica. the style is very creating and is eye catching it will stand out if next to normal steer signs. it reminds me of pub menus. the 'N' is doped caps which creates hierarchy and the 'G' the curves and underlines the word creates emphasis.
This photo is creative i can see that is happening, it creates reparation. the all capitals is bold and stands out. the dobble 'S' look like a widely kerned work witch is interesting
I think the artist tried to compare the tow type faces, the first being fun and the other looking formal and, the second uses serifs, which makes makes it look trustworthy, i like the way the point sizes in the first work has be increased as it goes along it kind of creates an action in the word.
Hierarchy is given to the word in the middle by making it all in capitals and increasing the point size, also the font is different, using serifs. it is very interesting the way the 'E' is tilts, it make you think if it fell or or if it was designed like that.
The smaller body copy is playful, the script used is shy there is not much but you can tell where it comes out.

People and Places
Assignment Overview
In this Brief i am further developing my understanding of typeface and letterforms in order to communicate a message to a target audience. i am to explore, research and analyse artists that work with typography to create a 2014 calendar for the creative industries department. the calendar must display 12 photographs of street typography and show a link to the Street Level series by Robert Brownjohn.
my final outcome will be a calendar which showcases street typography in Dunstable.

Evaluation
In this brief I was required to design a London underground poster advertising the 'Club to Catwak' exhibition currently showing at the V&A Museum.
I felt this brief was fast moving and made me work above my abilities. i felt challenged. researching the different artists gave me ideas and i have put each one of their styles into my outcomes. from research i understand that the London Underground is busy and i will need something to grabs someones attention and it is important to communicate and with the selected target audience in the case is every one. i think i hit this with the outcome of my posters.
from my last brief i learnt how to work with a client and produce a design that will apply to a range of people i brought this into the current brief. As this work is for a huge target it is important to produce a professional looking outcome, on this poster a lot of tome was spent using rulers to make sure text line up and was given some space away from the edge of the page so it is easy to read.
i think the color used in the poster are eye catching and how the black background will stand out if pleased next to a normal white poster
i like the link between the two posters and my artists i research.
Overall the poster fun and creative and i have worked in a different style to mine to produce the final outcome, I am pleased and excited about the posters, if i could change anything i would spend more time with my text and experiment with they way David Carson explores the i could make the body copy more creative.
Final Digital Outcomes
Large 48 sheet poster ( 6.3 cm x 8.4 cm) per sheet
After looking at this poster i think it is playful and the V&A logo have hierarchy they your eyes are next drawn to the Club To Catwalk and the information, i like how the zipper bleeds off the page and you can imagine how the pattern would carry on. like the artist Yiying Lu by background is coloured and i have left negative space making it interesting on the eye, my text are revered out which make them stand out and easy to read.
smaller 6 sheet poster ( 1200 mm x 1800 mm - 15 cm x 22.5 cm ) per sheet
This poster is really bright but the black background cools it down a bit so its not like looking at yellow on a white page as that strains your eyes and is hare to see, i have chosen colours from the 80's to relate to the exhibition, i like how the colored smoke layers over the V&A logo a little it brings depth to the poster. i chose to have the illustration the main focus of the poster so it will appeal to people walking through the tube because they will not see a poster full with white and black text.
i like the formation going along the side of the poster it, because of the way the illustration is vertical your eyes reads the page from Club To Catwalk to the illustration then to the exhibition information. over all i like the link the two posters have and the colors used.
the posters where crested on Adobe illustrator, using a black ground and following artist i researched i used the pen tool to create colored smoke, and suing the pant bucked selected my colors of choice.
the zipper was based on the fashion theme, I used the Bamboo drawing tablet a d the pen tool to create my designs and added color using the paint bucked, all work was grouped and sized to fit my selected page.
Second four 16.9 cm x 12.7 cm layouts
here i fould it heard to come up with how my designs could sit, this stage was a bit slow. i chose to display the V&A in an illustration and use that around my poster. on my third idea i chose to have the design flowing along the page creating a colorful pattern.
On my second poster i chose to use my experimentation but in a different illustration, this will create a link between the two posters and will make my designs flow.
first four 16.9 cm x 12.7 cm layouts
From my illustrations two was chosen to be worked on further, this is my first choice.
i chose the zipper because i think is i gives out many ideas on what you can do with it, also the zip could flow along the tube creating an interesting design.
my first idea was to have signs coming out of the zipper and having the text rotated at the same angle as the zipper. Using bright colours for the teeth of the zipper to fit in the colours found on 80's clothing and to Keith Haring's designs . I thought they did not look nice or professional having text flying around.
my second and third idea i felt their was too much white space, although i liked how their was white space, this lead to my final layout design shown below, i choose to use Jasper Goodal'sl style my by using my experimentation but changing the cloours to fit in with the 80's feel and the colours found in Keith Haring's designs.

Advertising in the London underground
I took a poster you would find in the London Underground a further analysed it tot understand the layout and why things are set the way they are.
the poster was interesting because it was for the London 2012 games, a number of people used the London underground to get the the stadium so it was clever to put the poster in the underground and other train stations. The poster also had the London Underground logo and the 2012 logo including information about games and travel, so i thought this related well to the poster i had to design.

Illustrations
These are my illustrations 24 in total.
this are my first 12 showing some ideas, some is style of the artists i research, for example Jasper Goodall and Yiying Lu. from this i chose two to take into a more detailed layout.
These more Illustration but they are a little bit more detailed as they show where text and explain how the color would go. i chose of the illustrations for the top just so i would get a better understanding of what i would do with them.
